More help is needed at Gulf Coast

Charlie Specht

Issue date: 3/16/07 Section: Opinion
Move on? How do you move on when your neighborhood has been under water for almost six months, like the Ninth Ward of New Orleans? As we drove into the city, I saw how the outlying areas remained almost completely untouched - an entire neighborhood in ruins because of horrid conditions and lack of people to help.

Though many people have picked up and left the Gulf Coast, steadfast volunteers have stepped up to help. Full-time volunteers team up with groups such as BonaResponds to assign people to jobs that can foster not only a sense of accomplishment, but a personal relationship with the people of the community.

Through BonaResponds, I met some of the nicest people that I never knew attended St. Bonaventure. By the end of the trip, I felt like I had a second family. The friends I made were special because of the simple fact that we helped contribute to the revival of a community.

This May, BonaResponds will return to the Gulf Coast to develop the communities there and chip away at the much-needed rebuilding of New Orleans. If you are looking to make a difference, enjoy the hot sun and warm weather, or just want to make new friends and have fun, I suggest you go.

After all, the people there really do need us.
