An estimated 182,460 new cases of invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed in the United States in 2008, according to the American Cancer Society. An estimated 40,480 of those cases will end in death.
Three years ago, Shape magazine founded Pilates for Pink, a fundraiser for the Breast Cancer Research Foundation (BCRF). The event began as one day of pilates classes in Union Square Park in New York City and has since inspired more than 400 gyms and fitness centers nationwide to host their own classes.
This year, St. Bonaventure University is joining the fight against breast cancer by hosting its very own Pilates for Pink classes.
"I think it will be great," said Rob DeFazio, director of the center for activities, recreation and leadership. "I am a big supporter of breast cancer research, and tying it into a program that we already offer
is a win-win."
Physical inactivity has been linked to breast cancer, according to the American Cancer Society.
"Exercising regularly helps maintain a strong immune system," said DeFazio. "I am a big advocate of Pilates. I believe it relaxes you while at the same time being mentally and physically challenging."
Regularly scheduled yoga and pilates classes during the week of Oct. 6 will be held in honor of the BCRF and Breast Cancer Awareness month.
Donations can be made in the form of cash, checks or by visiting www.bcrfcure.org. Last year, Shape magazine collected a grand total of $175,000 by sponsoring Pilates for Pink.
"Cancer is a horrible disease that has taken too many of my loved ones from me," senior journalism and mass communication major Paul Grolemund said. "Something needs to be done about it, and that's why I'm donating to Pilates for Pink. Knowing that I am donating to such an important cause and helping someone potentially fight this awful disease is the reason I gave."
Donations can be made at the Pilates for Pink table in the Reilly Center lobby between 11:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. Oct. 6 through Oct. 9. Donations will also be accepted at pilates classes until Oct. 25. Checks should be made payable to St. Bonaventure University.
