The club hockey team looks to snap a four-game losing streak this weekend when it hosts Mercyhurst and division rival Binghamton.
The Bonnies will never have faced Mercyhurst until the inaugural meeting tonight at 7 at the William O. Smith Recreation Center at East State and Front streets in Olean.
"I do not know much about Mercyhurst … but we are focusing on playing hard and winning," forward Josh Thomas, an alternate captain, said.
Binghamton is a familiar opponent for the Bonnies. The two met in a high-scoring affair Nov. 7, which the Bonnies won 7-5 thanks to four goals by freshman forward Josh Piegay. The second meeting between the teams takes place tomorrow night at 7, also at home.
"We have seen Binghamton and our team is focusing on beating (them) for another division win," Thomas said.
The 2-7-1 Bonnies will look to turn their season around before a long layoff during Christmas break. The team does not play again until it heads to Rochester Jan. 23. The team has lost its past four games, dropping a weekend series against Rutgers and Cornell. On Nov. 15 the Bonnies lost to Rutgers, 11-1, but managed to make things closer the next day in a 5-4 loss. Freshman James Bender scored the lone Bonnies goal on Saturday, while Piegay, sophomore Luke Marchiori, senior Ron Rechan and sophomore Vinny Judge each scored Sunday.
The following weekend included a 3-1 loss to Cornell Friday with Thomas scoring the team's only goal, followed by a 7-2 loss the next day.
With a difficult chunk of the schedule out of the way, Thomas said the team looks to gain momentum going in to the second semester with wins this weekend.
"We have played the toughest part of our schedule for the year the past few weeks," Thomas said. "We plan to play well this weekend and get a few victories which will carry over to next semester."
Despite the recent struggles and being ninth out of 11 teams in the NECHL, Thomas said the team is sticking to its goal of improving its win total and having a shot at making the playoffs.
"(We hope) to work hard for the rest of the season, and get as many wins as we can to secure a spot in (the) playoffs," Thomas said.
