St. Bonaventure University announced last Thursday Trietley would take on the university's full-time position as vice provost for student life - a role he had previously held on an interim basis.
Trietley, '86, said he grew up in Olean and the university was an important part of his life while growing up.
"I believe in Bona brown and white," he said.
Trietley said he viewed his familiarity with the university as one of his strengths while interviewing for the vice provost position.
"A huge part of my life has been associated with St. Bonaventure, and it's very important to me that our university succeed, and it's very important to me that our students succeed," he said. "I want our students to have a similar experience that I was able to have as a result of my Bonaventure education."
Trietley said his 22 years in the military gave him experience with student life because he dealt with individuals of the same age group as college students.
"I really felt like I understood the developmental process of people at that age," he said. "I understood the challenges, and I understand the issues."
The leadership skills Trietley learned in his military career also made him a good fit for the position, he said.
"The biggest thing I brought to the table is that I have an incredible amount of leadership management from being an army officer," he said.
Trietley retired as head of the university's ROTC program in May and became director of Safety and Security last summer. He took on interim vice provost duties when former vice provost for student life, Stephen Pugliese, resigned in November, citing family reasons, according to previous articles in The Bona Venture.
Trietley said the transition into the permanent position has been easy and smooth because he knew what to expect. He described the int-erim position as a four-month-long on-the-job interview.
