A new Mexican restaurant is scheduled to open at 76 West Main St., Allegany.

Don Lucho's anticipates an invitation-only opening during senior week and plans to officially open by commencement week, Stephanie Skandar, co-owner said.

Skandar, a retired teacher, said she plans to run the restaurant with her husband, Lucho Skandar, a retired civil engineer. The couple considers itself restauranteurs, Skandar said.

"My husband and I are reinventing ourselves through the restaurant," Skandar said.

Don Lorenzo's, Allegany's previous Mexican restaurant, closed April 16, 2008 for legal reasons. The Skandars were not the previous owners of Don Lorenzo's and said Don Lucho's is a separate establishment from Don Lorenzo's. However, Skandar said Don Lucho's plans to employ the same cooks and wait staff as Don Lorenzo's.

The restaurant hopes to add a new flavor to Allegany, Skandar said.

"The truth is that rural regions do not offer much diversity of cuisine," Skandar said. "We aim to fill this void."

Don Lucho's will serve authentic Mexican favorites like tacos, burritos, enchiladas and fajitas. They will also offer some of their own creations like nachos fajita.

Junior Andrew Maldonado, who considered himself a regular at Don Lorenzo's, said he is excited for the new restaurant.

"I can't wait for the opening (of Don Lucho's). It will be like old times again," Maldonado said. "There aren't a lot of places in town where you can get a margarita."

Junior Cameron Smith remembers Don Lorenzo's for its great atmosphere, chicken enchiladas and refreshing beverages.

"The drink specials should draw a lot of students in," Smith said.

"We have prepared a special environment at 76 W. Main St. for our patrons to relax and enjoy their lunches and dinners," Skandar said. "Don Lucho's friendly and hard-working team looks forward to serving SBU staff and student population."
