Dear Students,
I want to take a moment to explain the importance of the proposed student fee increase and how it would help the university's athletic department and the general student body.
We realize the raising of the fee is somewhat controversial, but I want to ensure you that this would be used to improve the collegiate experience for not only our student-athletes, but for the entire student body as well.
The portion of the fee the athletic department would receive will help us fund our participation in the ultra-competitive Atlantic 10 Conference. Due to increasing travel costs, the large geographical region the A-10 covers, and the general costs associated with competing at the Division I level, it has become increasingly challenging for us to be successful without significant changes in our funding model. We take pride in being able to compete at the Division I level and more than appreciate the support we receive from our students. The atmosphere students provide during home events is an extreme advantage for our teams and a major reason why we are not one of the six A-10 schools that charges students for admission to men's and women's basketball games.
The athletic department wants to do its part in providing all students with the best experience possible and increasing the student activity fee will allow us to do that. I wish all of you a safe and fun summer and the best of luck on your finals over the next few weeks.
