The person responsible for spray-painting graffiti on the walls of the John J. Murphy Professional Building and William F. Walsh Science Center pleaded guilty in a Cattaraugus County Court Monday.
John R. Thompson, 20, of Allegany, pleaded guilty to fourth-degree criminal mischief and second-degree making graffiti between Feb. 18 and March 13, according to an article on thebuffalonews.com.
Thompson also admitted to violating the terms and conditions of a previously imposed sentence of probation.
Thompson labeled the buildings with the word, "shayk." The meaning of the word is unknown.
Thompson was arrested March 13, at 1:35 a.m. with several cans of spray paint on Maple Avenue in Allegany.
Thompson's vandalism was one of many acts of damage the university dealt with last year and led to increased security, including the additions of new cameras throughout campus.
At the time of Thompson's arrest, Joe Becker, then interim director of Safety and Security said new cameras may not be the solution.
"(Installing new cameras) is being looked into right now, but we can't have cameras everywhere," he said. "There's always going to be a blind spot somewhere where somebody could do something."
Since then, St. Bonaventure has installed three interim security cameras in three major parking lots around campus. According to a Sept. 11 article in The Bona Venture, Student Government Association President Sabrina Maddeaux said "A full camera surveillance system will be on campus within the next 18 months."
Thompson is scheduled to be sentenced Feb. 1.
