Facets of St. Bonaventure academics have continued to evolve with time, and the need for new professors and adjuncts to fill these needs has created an opportunity for St. Bonaventure to search for a range of applicants.
Aside from Clare College, which adds staff from its respective fields, most of the other schools have begun the application process for new faculty.
According to Kathleen Mason, director of the Integrated Marketing Communications graduate program (IMC), the incoming tuition provided by IMC Buffalo location at Hilbert College since 2002 has enabled the Russell J. Jandoli School of Journalism and Mass Communication to hire new faculty members.
"We had six candidates to date, and we expect to bring two to three candidates to campus for interviews with faculty," Mason said.
The newly hired staff members' responsibilities would be the same as for any faculty member.
"The new professor would be instructing in both the IMC graduate classes and new media undergraduate classes," Mason said. "The specialization in the Internet communication, social media and other Web 2.0 technologies will greatly enhance and update both programs."
Likewise, the school of education is facing a similar situation in reference to hiring new staff members.
"The school of education placed ads for three positions to be filled for next year. Two were unfilled positions from last year, and the third was for a new program in Sports Studies," said Peggy Burke, dean of the school of education.
According to Burke, there is a current candidate pool and a short list of candidates to bring to campus for interviews, however the outcome of the searches in terms of visits to campus and contracts offered remains unknown.
Although Clare College isn't hiring any instructors directly, new faculty will be chosen from the current and participating faculty members.
"Clare College does not hire faculty," David DiMattio, dean of Clare College, said. "What I mean is when Clare College was established in 1997, it was decided that all faculty participating in it would come from a designated department."
Many professors teach Clare courses on top of their designated workload.
"Dr. DeVido has been teaching the CLAR 108/HIST 360C. So she has been a resource to both her department and the core curriculum," DiMattio said.
While the other schools continue to search for faculty, the schools of business and arts and sciences did not get back to The Bona Venture by press time.
