When a family loses a beloved member, its instinct is to comfort those who remain. St. Bonaventure University is no different.

Father Dan Hurley, O.F.M., played a vital part of the family at St. Bonaventure. His March 13 passing has given the entire extended Bonaventure community one more reason to come together.

Father Dan Hurley has been a friend and member of the university community since his years here as an undergraduate in the late 1930s. He settled at Bonaventure in 1969 and was a fixture at Mt. Irenaeus from the moment he moved to the mountain property in 1990. He continued his ministry for the students and visitors to the Mountain until his last days.

Father Dan Hurley embodied Franciscan ideals and showed limitless love and kindness toward everyone he met. Students and faculty are showing they appreciated Father Dan's work by following his example. In reaction to his passing, the Bonaventure community is putting others first, comforting those pained by his death and cheering them with memories of his wonderful life.

His funeral services filled the University Chapel to capacity as people gathered to honor and remember their dear friend, family member and mentor. During the service's homily, Father Dan Reilly, O.F.M., challenged those in attendance to live with the same compassion, faith, good humor and open-mindedness of Father Dan Hurley.

Our Bonaventure family has risen to the occasion.
